Yonsei University Dental Hospital (YUDH) was founded by Dr. W. J. Scheifley, an American missionary dentist, when he established Korea’s first dental clinic in 1915. As it nears its centennial, YUDH looks back to a long list of firsts in Korea’s dental history.
Among them, Dr. J. A. McAnlis’ introduction of various prosthetic treatments in Korea (1924); the beginning of modern dental treatment in Korea, with the expansion to the Dental Center and treatment by Korean dental specialists trained in the Hospital (1931); and the beginning of orthodontic treatment, by the first Korean orthodontist trained in the United States (1957).
Fast forward to 1995 and the newly built Dental Hospital, its 2 floors underground and 7 above housing a network of dental services for dental cavities, periodontic diseases, malocclusion, and other oral and maxillofacial diseases – YUDH continues to be the leadingedge in clinical and academic dentistry. The list of firsts continues in the 21st century.
YUDH was the first in Korea to introduce PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) in 2003; the Department of General Dentistry (providing a one-stop general dental service) in 2007; and the EMR (Electronic Medical Record) system in 2008, to enhance efficiency and convenience in the delivery of comprehensive dental care. It was also the first to establish the Center for Microscopy for high level treatments. The Hospital currently has nine special clinical departments (including Conservative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery) and six special clinics (including Senior Clinic, Adult Orthodontic Clinic, Dental Implant Clinic, Orofacial Pain Clinic, etc.).
As such, it is the largest dental hospital in Korea in terms of size and capacity, providing the most specialized medical service system for the most number of patients per day, including international patients who find our services easy to access and dependable. Designated as the only Medical Research Center by the Korean Government, Yonsei University Dental Hospital can proudly claim the title as the first and the best dental care center in Korea.
